Kofi Annan to propose Syrian unity gov't sans Assad!

This is stuff I just published to the end of my diary yesterday, which was breaking news in itself:
BREAKING: Douma, Syria under massive attack, another massacre feared

But then I thought "THIS IS HUGE" This deserves it's own headline. The first part of the story is that UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has called for a meeting of the UN Syria Action Group this Saturday with the US, Britain, France, China and Turkey in attendance. That news came out earlier yesterday and technically it was BREAKING but it made me too sleepy to write about it.

The second part of the story was broken by Reuters about eight hours ago and it basicly has two parts. 1.) Annan will call for the formation of a Syrian National Unity government without the participation of Bashar al-Assad and 2.) the Russians are supporting him in this.

This could be called Kofi Annan's new peace plan: "Throw the Bashar out!"

Now that is a breaking news story worth writing about, in fact it deserves it's own headline, which is why I am writing this, but for more details and the links to the source material you will have to go [here].

That seems appropriate because I suspect there is a strong connection between these stories, the attack on Douma, and the UN Action Group moves. From Assad's point of view, one all out desperate military attempt to win it his way probably makes sense given that he's not invited to the party on Saturday. If that is the case, look for a lot more Syrians to die before the weekend.

Al Jazeera English has picked the story up:
Activists in the Damascus suburb of Douma are broadcasting live what they say is the shelling by government forces on their city.
